Polycarbonate comes in two main forms: multiwall sheets, with a cellular structure of two to seven walls, and solid sheets, which are a single clear layer. At Gallina these are our PoliCarb® and PoliComp® ranges. Choosing the right one starts with a simple question: what matters more on this project, insulation or clarity?
When multiwall (PoliCarb®) is the better choice
The air trapped inside the cells is what makes multiwall sheets insulate. A 2-wall 4 mm sheet has a U value of 3.9 W/m²K; a 7-wall 40 mm sheet reaches 1.1 W/m²K. That makes PoliCarb® the natural choice for roofs, skylights, greenhouses, verandas and gazebos, where you want daylight without the heat loss or gain of a single skin.
- Thicknesses from 4 to 40 mm, in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7-wall structures
- Light, from about 0.8 kg/m² for 4 mm sheet
- Diffused light rather than a clear view, which reduces glare and hot spots
- UV protection on the exterior face (both faces on request)
When solid sheet (PoliComp®) is the better choice
Solid sheet is about clarity and impact strength. PoliComp® is as clear as glass, weighs half as much and is 250 times more impact resistant. Clear 2 mm sheet transmits 91% of light. It is the right material where people need to see through the glazing: vertical windows, canopies over entrances, room partitions and machinery guards.
- Thicknesses from 2 to 12 mm, widths up to 2,500 mm
- UV protection on both sides
- Can be cold-curved to a minimum radius of 150 times the sheet thickness
A quick way to decide
| Need | Choose |
|---|---|
| Large roof or skylight, thermal comfort | PoliCarb® multiwall |
| Clear view, glass-like look | PoliComp® solid |
| Lowest weight per m² | PoliCarb® multiwall |
| Vandal or impact protection | PoliComp® solid |
| Continuous roofing over long spans | arcoPlus® modular panels |
Both ranges are available with our IR solar-protection treatment, which lets light in while holding back infrared heat. If you are unsure which sheet fits your load, span and light requirements, send us your drawings and our team will recommend a thickness and structure.
